I had often wondered what had become of him after he had the double misfortune of being shot down over Fort Vaux and breaking his thigh on the way home. The wounds healed badly, diabetes set in, his leg was shortened by nine centimetres and Georg could only walk with sticks. Nevertheless, he continued to fly with every fibre of his heart.
